Worship Pastor’s Recording Leaves Megachurch Leader Devastated
Tony Johnson, the lead pastor of 2|42 Community Church in Michigan, recently shared his deep distress after a former worship pastor was found to have installed a hidden camera in a gender-neutral bathroom at the church. In a heartfelt message to his congregation, Johnson expressed that he and his staff had been profoundly affected by this violation of trust, describing it as not only a personal betrayal but also an attack on the entire church community.
Will Johnson, the former worship pastor, was arrested following the discovery of the camera and faces multiple charges, including surveilling an unclothed person and using a computer to commit a crime. After confessing to church leaders, he was immediately terminated from his position, and the church promptly notified local authorities, leading to his arrest. The church is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation.
Craig Ryan, chairman of the church’s elder board, addressed the congregation, assuring them that the church is taking the situation seriously. Following the incident, church officials conducted searches for any additional hidden devices and planned to hire professionals for further inspections, though there was currently no indication of other cameras being present.
In his remarks, Pastor Johnson condemned the act as a manifestation of evil and emphasized his responsibility to protect everyone who enters the church. He acknowledged the spiritual vitality of the congregation, noting that while the community experiences growth and transformation, challenges can arise unexpectedly.
While the church’s policy on gender-neutral bathrooms remains unclear, Johnson reiterated the commitment to ensuring the safety and privacy of all congregants. The church continues to navigate the fallout from this breach of trust as the investigation progresses.
We will always have sinners in our midst. Just be careful not to throw out baby Jesus with the bathwater. Too many people leave a church when problems arise, but we attend church for Christ, nothing else.
