Bishops Condemn Christian Nationalism
United Methodist Church (UMC) bishops have issued a strong condemnation of Christian nationalism, asserting that it fundamentally conflicts with the essence of God’s love and emphasizes power over compassion. In a pastoral letter released recently, Bishop Tracy S. Malone, president of the UMC Council of Bishops, expressed concern over the increasing division and polarization affecting societies and communities.
Malone explained that nationalism serves as a political ideology that undermines God’s love by positioning the interests of one group against another. He denounced both Christian and secular nationalism, arguing that Christian nationalism seeks to impose laws and public policies based on a twisted interpretation of the Gospel that prioritizes control and power over love. He highlighted that true Christian faith connects love for God with love for one’s neighbor and a commitment to justice.
The bishops pointed to global crises like climate change, economic inequality, and migration as factors that contribute to the rise of authoritarian leaders who thrive on division. Malone noted that this environment not only threatens civic engagement but can also lead to political violence and oppressive governance characterized by racism and xenophobia.
The letter reaffirmed the UMC’s dedication to the Wesleyan tradition, which acknowledges God’s ultimate authority over all creation. It encouraged United Methodists to utilize Scripture, tradition, reason, and personal experience to develop a social conscience aimed at pursuing justice and fostering global connections.
Earlier this year, the UMC General Conference made significant changes to its rules, allowing for the blessing of same-sex unions and the ordination of individuals in same-sex marriages. These adjustments followed the departure of over 7,500 mostly conservative churches due to ongoing debates about LGBT issues. The term “Christian nationalism” has recently gained traction in mainstream discourse, particularly among progressive advocacy groups, often used to describe certain conservative Christian factions.
Yes, times have changed the hearts of mankind, but, the Word of God will never change, or adjust itself to mans ways and toughs. Sodom and Gamora is a prime example of what God thinks of same sex marriage, and so on. Enough said. This world needs to repent, as does many so called churches. If a church is actually lead by His Holly Spirit, they stay in His Word, as it is written.
Even so, come Lord Jesus, come.
Incredibly ignorant to not regard humility as a primary fruit of the spirit and absolutely necessary for any other fruit to be attained to. You really need to go back and read the ancient post-apostolic fathers.
