Pastor’s Hospitalization And Delayed Recovery Raise Concerns
John MacArthur, Pastor of Grace Community Church (GCC), is facing a slower recovery than anticipated after undergoing three surgeries in the latter half of 2024, according to a recent update from the church. The 85-year-old pastor has been dealing with a range of health issues that have kept him away from the pulpit, and his recovery has been complicated by occasional setbacks affecting his heart, lungs, and kidneys. While doctors have yet to pinpoint a single cause for his health troubles, MacArthur has been hospitalized for the past two weeks for ongoing tests and treatment. GCC Elder Tom Patton has requested prayers for MacArthur and his medical team during this challenging time.
Phil Johnson, an elder at GCC and executive director of Grace to You, took to social media to address rumors surrounding MacArthur’s health, particularly regarding claims that he was receiving palliative care. Johnson emphasized that MacArthur has always preferred minimal public disclosure about his health, a long-standing policy that has been in place for years. He defended the pastor’s decision to limit health updates, explaining that constant inquiries and unsolicited advice can be overwhelming and exhausting.
MacArthur, who became pastor-teacher at GCC of Sun Valley in 1969, has preached over 3,000 sermons throughout his ministry. Last year, he faced a medical emergency on New Year’s Day, which required hospitalization and kept him from leading the second service of the day. Despite the setback, the church later reported that he was recovering and just needed rest following a busy holiday period.
MacArthur experienced further health challenges later in 2024, which led him to take a break from preaching from July to November. He returned to the pulpit for a Thanksgiving service, expressing gratitude for God’s guidance through his struggles. Reflecting on his difficult experiences, MacArthur shared his belief that God’s providence was evident in every challenge, emphasizing that even in times of hardship, he recognized the kindness and grace of God.
