He wants to be a regular member.
Jon Weece, the senior pastor of Southland Christian Church in Lexington, Kentucky, announced plans to step down from his leadership role in January 2026 and transition to being a regular member of the church. Weece, who became the lead pastor in 2003, shared the news during a sermon on January 19, explaining that this decision is motivated by what he believes is best for the church’s future. He emphasized that he is not leaving due to exhaustion, disappointment, or any moral failing but as a way to ensure the church continues to thrive long-term.
Weece reflected on his deep-rooted experience in church ministry and noted that many pastors either leave too soon or overstay their tenure, which can harm the church. He cited the example of a biblical passage from Numbers that outlines a retirement age for priests, drawing a parallel to his own decision. At 52, he felt it was time to step aside and pass the leadership to someone else, specifically Pastor Scott Nickell, a member of the church’s leadership team, who he fully endorses as his successor.
Nickell, in a conversation with the congregation, shared his initial reluctance to take on the lead pastor role when it was first suggested to him, acknowledging the heavy responsibility and challenges that come with the position. However, over time, he developed a deep sense of calling and excitement for the role. He noted that he had gone through an extensive confirmation process, and with clear guidance from the Holy Spirit, he felt ready to step into the position.
Weece expressed his gratitude for the privilege of serving the church and asked the congregation to support Nickell and his family as they prepare for the transition. He called the decision to step down a way to ensure Southland’s future success, and he encouraged the church to enjoy the final year of his leadership, continuing to work together to support Nickell’s upcoming role.
Both pastors spoke with conviction about the importance of doing what’s best for the church’s growth and long-term health, highlighting the careful, thoughtful process of transitioning leadership to ensure a smooth and successful future for Southland Christian Church.
