A church hero was lost.

A church in Mississippi is mourning the tragic loss of one of its deacons, Eddie Shed, who was fatally shot while shielding others during a church-hosted Easter egg hunt last weekend. The incident occurred at the Goldin Sports Complex in Gulfport, where The Empowerment Ministries Christian Center had organized the community event.

Deacon Shed was hailed as a hero by his church, which described him as a selfless servant who consistently put others before himself. “His bravery and dedication to our community will never be forgotten,” the church said in a statement, highlighting his lasting impact and devotion to his family, including his wife, Doris, and their children.

To support Shed’s family during this difficult time, the church launched a GoFundMe campaign. As of Monday, the fundraiser had garnered over $5,800 toward its $25,000 target. The campaign page honored Shed’s legacy, describing him as a compassionate and faith-driven individual whose service left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

The suspect in the shooting, 24-year-old Tyran Deion Gable, reportedly arrived at the event due to a custody dispute with a woman attending the hunt. Authorities say Gable began shooting, killing Shed as he tried to protect the woman. Another person who intervened was also injured. Gable was later taken into custody, charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault, and hospitalized with injuries sustained during the confrontation.

In court, Gable was denied bond for the murder charge, while bond for the assault charge was set at $250,000. Pastor Gregg Magee paid tribute to Shed’s courage, describing him as a cornerstone of the community and someone whose kindness and faith touched everyone around him.
