The suspect has been caught.
A suspect linked to the death of Pastor William Schonemann, a cherished spiritual leader from New River Bible Chapel in Arizona, has been identified, according to a recent statement from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. Schonemann was discovered deceased in his bed in April under suspicious circumstances, with his hands reportedly fastened to a wall.
Though the suspect’s identity has not been made public, 12 News reported on Friday that the individual is currently in the custody of another law enforcement agency on an unrelated matter. No additional details were shared, and when contacted by The Christian Post on Monday, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office declined to provide further updates.
The shocking loss has left Schonemann’s family, congregation, and close friends in disbelief.
“I’m speechless. I truly can’t imagine anyone wanting to hurt him,” said Diane Brown, a longtime friend and church member. Schonemann had been leading the congregation for over three decades.
“Bill was like family to me,” she added in her interview with 12 News. “After my husband passed, he was there for me. And when his wife was ill, I did what I could to support him.”
Schonemann’s son, Randall, previously told AZ Central that his father’s passing came as a complete surprise. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, William Schonemann reportedly turned to his Christian faith following his service in Vietnam. Following the death of his wife of 49 years, Crystal, in 2022, he became even more dedicated to serving the church. Randall described his father as warm, sociable, and passionate about working on cars.
Speaking to 12 News on Friday, Randall expressed cautious optimism about progress in the case.
“This is a move in the right direction,” he said. “I don’t think I’ll ever be able to comprehend what kind of person could do something like this. Honestly, I hope I never do.”
Authorities had previously informed The Christian Post that the 76-year-old pastor was discovered on April 28 at his residence, where clear signs of foul play were found. Although no full details were released, Fox 10 Phoenix reported that Schonemann suffered severe injuries, and his body was found with his arms extended and hands affixed to the wall above his bed.
Despite the pain of his absence, Brown said the congregation is taking comfort in their belief that Schonemann is now at peace.
“We feel lost—like sheep without our shepherd,” she told 12 News, tearfully. “But we know where he is now, and that brings some peace. I may not understand why his life ended the way it did, but I trust he’s resting in peace.”
