They are offering food and shelter.

A Florida church, founded by Cheryl Reber, has become a beacon of hope for the homeless community by providing food and shelter to those in need. Established in 2019, 100 Church is located in North Port and has been offering free meals and temporary shelter since October 2020, even during the COVID-19 lockdown when many other churches had to stop similar services. The church, housed in a storefront, uses its space creatively, dividing it for sanctuary purposes and a dining area, and providing a safe haven during harsh weather conditions.

The church’s mission is deeply rooted in faith, as Reber emphasized that they prayed for guidance on how to best serve their community. Despite being a small congregation with limited resources, they have continued to offer assistance, especially during natural disasters such as hurricanes. Most of those seeking shelter bring their own bedding, as many are used to sleeping outside. For those who don’t have bedding, the church ensures they are provided with essentials like hygiene products and blankets.

Reber’s efforts have drawn attention from local media and word-of-mouth, leading to a broader reach in the community. The church serves daily meals, feeding anywhere between 15 to 35 people, with a dedicated group of volunteers helping to prepare and serve the food. Along with the free dinners, volunteers also assist with breakfast and managing the shelter during cold weather, ensuring the church continues to be a lifeline for those in need.

The financial burden of these efforts largely comes from the church’s own budget, as most of the congregation consists of homeless individuals unable to contribute. However, Reber has outside supporters who help fund her ministry, which she likens to missionary work. She hopes that her actions reflect the teachings of Jesus, particularly the call to serve “the least of these,” and aims to set an example for others in the Christian community.

Reber highlighted the challenges some churches face in welcoming the homeless, stressing the importance of creating an inclusive environment. She criticized certain practices, such as making homeless individuals leave their belongings outside, as unwelcoming. Instead, she believes that true Christian service involves embracing those in need, fulfilling the mission that Christ laid out for His followers.
