Sequel To ‘The Passion Of The Christ’ Officially In Motion

Lionsgate has joined forces with Mel Gibson to distribute The Resurrection of the Christ, the long-awaited sequel to The Passion of the Christ. The new film will be produced by Gibson and Bruce Davey through their company, Icon Productions. Lionsgate has previously worked with Gibson on other major films, and both parties expressed enthusiasm about continuing their collaboration on this faith-based project.

Production is scheduled to begin in August, with filming set to take place at Rome’s Cinecittà Studios, as well as in various historical locations across Italy. The original film’s lead actor, Jim Caviezel, will return to play Jesus, alongside Maia Morgenstern and Francesco De Vito reprising their roles as Mary and Peter. Gibson has hinted that the film will be a bold and unconventional take on the biblical narrative, with the use of modern de-aging technology to maintain character continuity.

Caviezel has shared his personal reflections on returning to the role, noting that he is preparing spiritually and emotionally for the challenge. He mentioned drawing inspiration from works like C.S. Lewis’s The Screwtape Letters and described his approach this time as more grounded. Gibson and Caviezel both acknowledged the controversy surrounding The Passion of the Christ but view it as a sign that the film struck a meaningful chord.

The original 2004 film was a global success, earning hundreds of millions at the box office and sparking international debate. Gibson has often spoken about the film’s theme of redemption and the importance of faith, saying that the resurrection remains one of the most profound and challenging elements of Christian belief. He believes the new film will continue to explore these themes in a way that resonates deeply with audiences worldwide.
