Military Makes Waves With Bold New Bible Edition
The Australian Defence Force (ADF) recently introduced a newly updated edition of the New International Version (NIV) Bible, the first since 2005. The official launch took place on March 13 at the Russell Offices in Canberra, with Tina King from Bible Society Australia presenting the Bible to Major General Sue Graham. The new edition is designed to be more relevant to service members, with customized prayers and content for those in the Navy, Army, and Air Force.
During the event, Major General Graham acknowledged the significance of having spiritual resources that speak directly to the experiences of military personnel. She expressed appreciation for the continued public support and the dedication of Bible Society Australia in making the Bible accessible to members of the ADF. Tina King echoed this sentiment, stating the hope that the Bible would be a practical, daily source of encouragement rather than a neglected item on a shelf.
A historical exhibit was also part of the launch, featuring military Bibles used throughout Australian history. One of the highlighted artifacts was a Bible that protected a World War I soldier, Lance Corporal Phillip Davies, from deadly shrapnel during a battle in Belgium. The Bible had been distributed by Bible Society Australia, which donated around a million copies during that period, demonstrating the longstanding relationship between the military and spiritual resources.
Principal Chaplain Kerry Larwill spoke about the ongoing relevance of the Bible in military life, noting that many Australians still identify as Christian or have a spiritual outlook. He emphasized the Bible’s importance for those facing the mental and emotional demands of service, offering comfort and guidance through faith-based values and wisdom.
The ceremony was attended by representatives from Christian military organizations, including the Military Christian Fellowship of Australia. The new Bible edition also features a foreword by General (retired) David Hurley, former Governor-General of Australia. This release underscores the continuing effort to provide meaningful spiritual support to members of the Defence Force.
