Christian School Shooting Survivor Beats All Odds
Nearly three months after being critically injured in a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in Wisconsin, 14-year-old River Clardy is recovering, thanks to the combined efforts of doctors and his family’s faith. River’s parents, Christina and Brett Clardy, expressed their gratitude for their son’s survival, crediting his resilience and the miraculous healing powers they believe were aided by God. Despite the severity of his injuries, River’s recovery has surpassed expectations.
The shooting, which occurred on December 16, 2024, was carried out by 15-year-old Natalie Rupnow, who tragically killed a teacher and a student before taking her own life. River was among the five injured, with serious wounds to his neck, throat, and other areas of his body. His mother, Christina, a first-year teacher at the school, acted swiftly to protect her students, and after securing them, searched for her own children. Once River’s condition was confirmed, he was rushed to a hospital in critical condition.
Upon arrival at the hospital, River was in dire shape, requiring immediate medical attention due to severe blood loss and low vital signs. He underwent multiple surgeries over the course of 46 days, with over 200 medical staff members involved in his care. Doctors considered River one of the most critically ill patients they had seen in years. His recovery required extensive rehabilitation, where River had to relearn basic skills, including writing, swallowing, and self-care activities.
Christina and Brett have expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of support from their community and medical team. River’s progress has been nothing short of remarkable, and his family attributes much of his survival and healing to their faith and the expertise of the healthcare professionals. River’s recovery journey is a testament to his determination and the support of everyone around him.
The Clardy family’s experience has shown them the importance of appreciating life’s blessings, even in the midst of hardship. Despite the traumatic circumstances, they are focused on their son’s survival and the positive aspects of their journey, thankful for the recovery that River has made so far.
