Abuse Scandal Rocks Texas Megachurch

Tim Somers, a former youth pastor at Elevation Church in North Carolina, was recently dismissed after allegations of inappropriate behavior involving former students at Oaks Church in Texas came to light. The incidents are said to have occurred over a decade ago, during Somers’ time as an intern and staff member at Oaks Church. Elevation Church confirmed that upon learning of these accusations, they placed Somers on leave and reported the matter to local authorities in Texas. Although no formal charges have been filed, Somers and Elevation Church mutually agreed that he would no longer serve in his pastoral role due to the seriousness of the allegations.

The Red Oak Police Department in Texas is actively investigating the claims, which involve accusations of misconduct during Somers’ tenure at Oaks Church. Chief of Police Garland Wolf stated that while Somers has been named in the investigation, the timeline of events, locations, and details of those involved are still being determined. Authorities are working to establish whether any offenses took place on church property and within their jurisdiction. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities aiming to determine the extent of the misconduct.

Somers’ case has surfaced in the wake of another recent incident involving Jerry Nickerson, a former student pastor at Hope Fellowship in Texas, who admitted to inappropriate conduct with a minor during his time at Oaks Church roughly ten years ago. Nickerson’s confession led to additional reports of inappropriate behavior at Oaks Church, prompting church leaders to report the matter to law enforcement. Multiple former students have since come forward with similar accounts of inappropriate communication and contact with youth leaders from that period.

Oaks Church has confirmed that Somers worked there as an intern from 2009 to 2011 and as a staff member from 2011 to 2013. Following Nickerson’s admission, it was reported that Somers was also accused of inappropriate conduct, and police were notified. Survivor advocate Amy Smith publicly stated that Somers had been terminated due to allegations of sexual misconduct.

While the investigation continues, Chief Wolf has emphasized that the process remains thorough, with detectives gathering facts, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing statements. Though Somers has not yet been charged, authorities are determined to seek justice for the victims, prosecute those responsible, and clear those falsely accused. The police department remains committed to ensuring a complete and fair resolution.
