Christian Group Fights For Jailed Pastor’s Freedom

Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), a human rights organization based in the U.K., has called on Chinese authorities to release Ma Yan, a 32-year-old pastor who was detained for allegedly hosting an unauthorized Christian gathering. Ma, who hails from Yunnan Province, faced charges in February 2025 for organizing a small religious meeting with fewer than 10 attendees, an activity considered illegal under China’s regulations on religious gatherings.

Ma’s arrest took place in August 2024 when police raided a Christian gathering at a guest house in Yinchuan’s Jinfeng District. Ma, along with three others, was detained and accused of “disrupting public order.” While some individuals were released after brief detention, Ma was held for 10 days. After his initial release, authorities placed him under criminal detention for organizing illegal religious gatherings.

During his trial, Ma admitted to the charges, which carry a relatively lighter punishment compared to more severe offenses. The prosecution suggested a nine-month prison term, though a final judgment has not yet been made. Ma’s family has expressed worry about the potential long-term consequences of the sentence if it is confirmed.

Ma converted to Christianity while in college and later became a preacher in house churches in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Prior to his arrest, he had been visiting another preacher’s family to provide support. Following his arrest, Ma’s family released a public letter questioning the charges and asserting that Christian gatherings should not be deemed illegal.

In response to Ma’s situation, various Christian groups in China have organized prayers for him and his wife, Meihang. CSW has condemned Ma’s arrest, accusing the Chinese government of targeting religious minorities and violating religious freedoms. Open Doors, an organization tracking Christian persecution, has noted that China’s control over religious practices includes strict regulations and surveillance of unregistered house churches.
