Scholar Sparks Debate With Take On Faith And Gender Identity
In a recent installment of his podcast Ask N.T. Wright Anything, New Testament scholar N.T. Wright addressed a heartfelt question involving transgender identity and Christian faith. A female listener who has lived as a man for ten years after undergoing hormone treatment and surgery shared her journey of coming to faith in Christ post-transition. She expressed concern about her current lifestyle and wondered what Scripture might say about someone in her situation, noting that most testimonies of transgender individuals turning to Christianity often involve de-transitioning early in their transition process.
Co-host Michael F. Bird acknowledged the complexity of the matter, emphasizing that both biological and psychological factors can be deeply intertwined and difficult to understand. Wright agreed, pointing out that discussions about gender identity are relatively recent in the theological sphere, making them uncharted territory for traditional theological frameworks. He noted how modern culture often prioritizes internal identity over physical reality, which presents unique pastoral and theological challenges.
Wright admitted he hasn’t directly counseled someone dealing with gender dysphoria but approached the subject cautiously, aware of its sensitive nature. He warned against politicizing such deeply personal experiences and emphasized that while scientific and biological facts matter, they don’t offer the full picture. Highlighting God’s grace, he emphasized that God meets individuals exactly where they are, not with condemnation, but with a path toward healing and growth shaped by love and truth.
He reiterated that acknowledging God’s presence does not automatically validate every past decision but opens a door to transformation. Wright likened this process to biblical stories, such as Zacchaeus’ encounter with Jesus, which show that change can happen instantly or over time. He stressed the importance of having wise and compassionate pastoral support while navigating complex issues like gender identity, urging individuals to rely on the Spirit’s guidance through their journey.
In a related conversation featured on The Christian Post podcast Generation Indoctrination, the discussion turned to individuals who underwent gender transition procedures and later regretted them. One such individual, Forrest Smith, shared how he was placed on cross-sex hormones at age 20 and underwent permanent surgeries, including sterilization, without fully understanding the consequences. He criticized the medical system for fast-tracking his transition without addressing root issues like addiction and lack of male role models. Ultimately, Smith found healing through the compassionate guidance of a Pentecostal pastor who focused on restoration rather than judgment, helping him find peace through repentance and spiritual support.
