Woman’s Church Visit Ends In Unthinkable Attack

A tragic incident occurred in eastern Uganda when a mother of six, Nasiimu Mirembe, was fatally attacked by her husband shortly after attending her first Christian church service. Mirembe, who had recently accepted the Christian faith on March 21, was 41 years old and lived in the Busembatya town council. Her decision to convert reportedly followed a conversation with a close friend who introduced her to the Gospel.

On March 23, as Mirembe and her friend made their way to the church, a neighbor recognized them and continued walking. Mirembe grew anxious that the neighbor might inform her husband, fearing violent repercussions. Despite her concerns, her friend encouraged her to continue attending the service, where Mirembe was publicly welcomed as a new believer.

As they returned from church, Mirembe and her friend encountered her husband, Adamu Mukungu, near the same area. According to the friend, Mukungu confronted his wife, expressing anger over her presence at a church during Ramadan. He allegedly became violent, attacking Mirembe with a knife after initially slapping her. The friend tried to intervene and screamed for help, prompting nearby church members to rush to the scene, at which point Mukungu fled.

Mirembe was rushed to a local clinic and later transferred to a hospital in Bugiri due to the severity of her injuries. Despite medical efforts, she was pronounced dead in the early morning hours of March 24. Authorities are currently searching for Mukungu, who remains at large.

This case highlights ongoing concerns about religious persecution in Uganda, where individuals converting from Islam to Christianity sometimes face violent backlash. Although Uganda’s constitution protects religious freedom, including the right to change one’s religion, tensions persist, particularly in regions with significant Muslim populations.
