Church Elder’s Emotional Apology Goes Viral
Tra Willbanks, a longtime elder at Gateway Church, addressed congregants in an emotional statement following allegations of sexual abuse against Robert Morris, the church’s founder who recently resigned. Willbanks began by expressing deep sympathy for Cindy Clemishire and any others who have experienced abuse, acknowledging the profound pain they may be enduring. He apologized on behalf of himself and the church’s elders, recognizing the turmoil and feelings of betrayal among members in light of recent events.
Willbanks, who has been with Gateway Church for 18 years and has served as a non-staff elder since 2014, emphasized that he and his family were shocked and devastated by the allegations against Morris. He explained that as a father of six girls, the situation has been particularly distressing, and he has struggled to comprehend the revelations.
Addressing the church’s response, Willbanks assured congregants that an independent review of the allegations from 1982 to 1987 is underway, led by the law firm Haynes & Boone, LLP. He pledged transparency in sharing the findings with the church once the review is complete.
Reflecting on the uncertainty surrounding Gateway Church’s future, Willbanks expressed faith in God’s sovereignty and affirmed his commitment to worshiping and supporting the church community through the challenges ahead. He emphasized that despite the turmoil, the church belongs to Jesus Christ, and the elders are dedicated to following His guidance in navigating this difficult period.
Throughout his address, Willbanks conveyed a sense of deep personal and communal sorrow while striving to uphold transparency and faith in the church’s ongoing mission. His words underscored the gravity of the situation and the church’s commitment to addressing the allegations with integrity and compassion.
