Thieves Steal Sacred Tablets From Church

A mural of the Ten Commandments, along with two other Victorian-era religious paintings, has been stolen from St. Andrew’s Church in Little Steeping, Lincolnshire, England. The stolen artwork, displayed in heavy wooden frames, included depictions of the Lord’s Prayer and Moses receiving the commandments. The theft has left the church community distressed, as the pieces hold sentimental value. Police have yet to confirm the market value of the stolen items but are investigating.

The theft is believed to have occurred overnight, as officers found muddy footprints but no sign of forced entry. Churchwarden Basil Harwood, 80, expressed his frustration, humorously commenting that the thieves must not have read the commandment “Thou shalt not steal.” He speculated that a visitor might have unlocked a side door and returned after hours to commit the crime.

Despite the theft, Harwood emphasized the importance of keeping the church open to maintain its welcoming tradition, though volunteers will now be more vigilant in monitoring the doors. An extension cable was also taken during the incident, but other church items were left untouched.

Lincolnshire Police are asking the public for any information that could help recover the stolen artwork. They have circulated descriptions to local dealers and asked for people to report sightings on platforms such as Facebook Marketplace. The congregation hopes the thieves reflect on their actions and return the sacred pieces.
