Shocking Number Of Daily Attacks On Christians Revealed

Reports from a Christian advocacy organization reveal a sharp rise in attacks on Christians across India, with an average of at least two incidents per day in 2025. Between January and May alone, the United Christian Forum (UCF), an inter-denominational group based in New Delhi, documented 313 cases through its national helpline. The violence includes physical assaults, social exclusion, and online hate campaigns, particularly concentrated in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

UCF’s national convenor, A.C. Michael, noted that 2024 saw a record 834 attacks, marking a consistent year-over-year increase in violence targeting Christians. Uttar Pradesh had the highest number of reported cases last year, followed closely by Chhattisgarh. Both states continue to see frequent incidents this year, with dozens of cases already reported by May. Activists in the region say many of these attacks are fueled by allegations of coerced religious conversions—claims that they strongly deny.

Minakshi Singh, a Christian advocate in Uttar Pradesh, emphasized that no state or central government has been able to produce official evidence of forced conversions, despite being asked by the Supreme Court to do so in 2022. Anti-conversion laws, now active in 12 Indian states, are often cited as a pretext for harassment by Hindu nationalist groups, particularly in regions governed by the BJP. Christian leaders argue that these laws are frequently misused to intimidate minority communities under the guise of legal enforcement.

The UCF has tracked a steady increase in violence against Christians since 2014, the year the BJP came to power nationally, when the group recorded 127 incidents. Many victims reportedly avoid filing police complaints due to fear of retaliation or lack of trust in law enforcement. In one recent case in Chhattisgarh, a Christian man named Rajesh Sharma was denied bail after being arrested in connection to a church attack carried out by Hindu extremists.

Christian leaders are urging the Indian government to take concrete steps to address the violence and appoint senior officials to oversee investigations into these growing incidents. With Christians making up just 2.3% of India’s population, the community’s leaders warn that continued neglect of these attacks could have lasting consequences for their safety and religious freedom.
