Christian Family Attacked In Grisly Mob Assault
In eastern Uganda, a Muslim family who had recently converted to Christianity was tragically killed in a violent attack on December 26. Kaiga Muhammad, his wife Sawuya Kaiga, and their son Swagga Amuza Kaiga embraced Christianity on November 22, 2024, after welcoming a group of Christians into their home. Fearing hostility from the local Muslim community, the family initially kept their conversion secret. Their decision to convert was particularly sensitive, as Muhammad held a leadership position in the local mosque.
Tensions escalated when local Muslims noticed Muhammad attending a Christian service in mid-December. Upon learning about the family’s conversion, the area chairperson, Wangule Abudu, confronted Muhammad and demanded that they renounce their new faith. When Muhammad refused, Abudu threatened to rally the local Muslim community against them. Despite the threats, the family stood by their faith.
On December 26, the situation turned deadly when a group of attackers set the family’s house on fire, killing all three occupants. Neighbors arrived too late to save the family, and the victims were burned beyond recognition. Authorities responded by arresting two suspects, including Abudu, who were charged with arson and murder.
This tragic event is one of many instances of religious persecution faced by Christians in Uganda, particularly those who convert from Islam. While Uganda’s constitution guarantees religious freedom, tensions remain high in areas with significant Muslim populations, such as the eastern regions. Although Muslims constitute about 12% of the population, converts to Christianity often face threats and violence.
The attack underscores ongoing challenges in ensuring religious freedom and safety for all Ugandans, highlighting the need for continued efforts to protect vulnerable communities and uphold constitutional rights.
