He’s overhauling the leadership.

Pope Francis has appointed a new bishop to lead the Diocese of Tyler in Texas, replacing a former bishop known for his conservative theological views and outspoken criticism of the pontiff. The diocese announced that the Most Rev. Gregory Kelly, an auxiliary bishop from Dallas, will assume leadership, filling the role previously held by Bishop Joseph E. Strickland, who was removed from office last year.

Kelly expressed gratitude for his new role, describing it as an unexpected “pre-Christmas gift.” He acknowledged Pope Francis’ leadership of the global Catholic Church and shared his commitment to serving the local community. Kelly will officially begin his ministry in February, with Bishop Joe S. Vásquez of the Diocese of Austin continuing as apostolic administrator until his installation.

Strickland, who was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI, became known for his critical stance on Pope Francis, particularly regarding policies on LGBTQ+ issues and broader doctrinal matters. In May 2023, Strickland alleged on social media that Pope Francis was undermining the “Deposit of Faith.” His removal followed an Apostolic Visitation led by Bishop Dennis Sullivan of Camden and Bishop Emeritus Gerald Kicanas of Tucson, which resulted in a recommendation to the Vatican that his leadership was no longer tenable.

The Vatican officially announced Strickland’s removal in November 2023, citing governance and leadership concerns. Cardinal Daniel DiNardo of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston stated that the decision followed months of thorough consideration by the Dicastery for Bishops and the pope. Strickland responded to his removal by reaffirming his commitment to the Gospel and encouraging prayer for the Church and Pope Francis, despite his disagreements.

Despite his removal, Strickland remained active in his advocacy work. In January, he received a Pro-Life Recognition Award at the National Prayer Service for his anti-abortion efforts. While his departure marks a significant change for the Diocese of Tyler, Strickland has called for continued prayer and faithfulness to the Church’s mission.
