There were many concerns about having an AI priest.

Catholic Answers recently addressed the feedback surrounding its introduction of an artificial intelligence (AI) priest named “Fr. Justin” in their apologetics application. Christopher Check, the organization’s president, acknowledged the constructive criticism received and announced adjustments to the AI’s characterization.

Check emphasized the intention behind selecting a priestly persona for the AI was to symbolize knowledge, authority, and respect for clergy within Catholic Answers. However, recognizing concerns expressed by users regarding this portrayal, the organization swiftly responded. In response, they committed to developing a new non-clerical character for the app, indicating it would be available promptly. Until then, “Fr. Justin” will be referred to simply as “Justin.”

Check clarified that the term “laicized” wouldn’t apply, given the AI’s fictional nature. He assured users of the AI’s continued availability on Catholic.com and emphasized ongoing improvements based on user feedback.

Originally, the purpose of “Fr. Justin” was to provide informative responses about Catholicism through innovative AI technology, facilitating dialogue and exploration of faith-related inquiries. Catholic Answers aimed to leverage advanced AI capabilities to enhance users’ understanding of Catholic teachings while emphasizing that the AI couldn’t replace human interaction with priests or spiritual advisors.

Chris Costello, the director of information technology at Catholic Answers, explained that the decision to portray the AI as a priest was to mirror the authoritative yet approachable nature of real-life priests. Despite this choice, the organization remained confident that users would distinguish between the AI and human clergy.

Moreover, Catholic Answers reaffirmed its commitment to employing technology to further its mission of elucidating and defending the Catholic faith. By offering diverse media formats and interactive tools, including podcasts, videos, and a comprehensive Bible Navigator, the organization seeks to engage individuals at various stages of their faith journey.

In essence, Catholic Answers aims to adapt and utilize technology responsibly to fulfill its mission while remaining responsive to user feedback and ensuring the integrity of its representations in the digital realm.
