The American Bible Society has announced the closure of its Faith and Liberty Discovery Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, just three years after its grand opening. The center, which came with a price tag of approximately $60 million, will cease operations on April 1, with the last day for public visits scheduled for March 28.

In a press release shared with The Christian Post, the ABS cited several reasons for the closure, including structural limitations, the enduring impact of COVID-19 lockdowns, and other factors affecting sustainability. Refunds will be issued to individuals who purchased tickets for visits after March 28.

Financial challenges have plagued the center since its inception, with only about $54,000 in ticket sales reported for the tax year spanning July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2022. This was in stark contrast to total expenses amounting to around $11 million, as indicated in a revenue statement.

Jennifer Holloran, newly appointed president and CEO of the society, expressed appreciation for the center’s role in fostering learning and inspiration. Looking ahead, she spoke of plans to reimagine content delivery through a digitized format accessible to the public.

Rob Wonderling, Executive Director of FLDC, reflected on the center’s impact, acknowledging its contribution to inspiration, engagement, and personal discovery at the heart of Independence Mall. He praised the dedicated staff for their commitment to the center’s mission.

The Faith and Liberty Discovery Center, inaugurated in May 2021, aimed to educate individuals of diverse religious backgrounds about Christianity’s influence on American history. Its grand opening coincided with Philadelphia’s annual Wawa Welcome America Festival, boasting 25,000 square feet of interactive gallery space enhanced by cutting-edge technology.

Visitors were guided through immersive experiences using handheld smart lamps, capturing favorite Bible verses, quotes, and stories for later reflection. Galleries showcased American Changemakers and featured audio recordings by iconic figures like Johnny Cash. A unique theater experience allowed guests to journey through historic Philadelphia, witnessing William Penn’s pursuit of religious freedom.

While the closure marks the end of a chapter for the Faith and Liberty Discovery Center, its legacy of promoting understanding and appreciation of Christian heritage in America will endure.
