Biden chooses whatever benefits himself.
During a recent televised interview, Archbishop of Washington Wilton Cardinal Gregory commented on President Joe Biden’s adherence to Catholic teachings, describing him as a “cafeteria Catholic.” This term suggests that Biden selectively embraces aspects of the faith while disregarding or contradicting others. Gregory highlighted the president’s tendency to emphasize certain dimensions of Catholicism while sidestepping or politicizing contentious issues.
Acknowledging Biden’s regular church attendance and sincere devotion to his faith, Gregory nonetheless criticized the president for avoiding discussions on complex topics and using contentious issues for political gain. He pointed out Biden’s support for policies such as abortion rights, which are at odds with Catholic doctrine.
During Biden’s recent State of the Union address, he pledged to restore Roe v. Wade, a landmark Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion nationwide. The president’s administration has also endorsed legislation like the “Women’s Health Protection” Act, which aims to nullify state restrictions on abortion.
While some, like Episcopal Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde and CBS News Correspondent Ed O’Keefe, argue that Biden can personally oppose abortion while supporting its legality as a political leader, others, including Gregory, express concerns about the inconsistency between Biden’s Catholicism and his political stances.
Gregory suggested that Pope Francis might share similar concerns with Biden regarding his presentation of Catholic views on issues like abortion. He praised the pope’s approach of engaging with individuals rather than attacking them, encouraging them to appeal to their better judgment.
In the past, Gregory chose not to deny communion to Biden despite their disagreements on abortion, preferring to foster a cooperative relationship based on shared social principles while recognizing areas of disagreement.
Criticism of Biden intensified when he recognized the “Transgender Day of Visibility” on Easter Sunday, drawing condemnation from figures like House Speaker Mike Johnson, who accused the president of betraying the significance of Easter. Biden, however, dismissed such criticisms, stating that he did not intentionally schedule the recognition on Easter Sunday.
Biden ‘s not perfect but better than the phony baloney priests that molest kids in the name of salvation. And mislead their flock.
