What has the world come to.

In Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district, Pastor Raj Kishore and a guest faced detention by local police while observing New Year’s Eve prayers in his Sonbarasa village home. The incident unfolded around 11 p.m. local time when officers from the Kothibari police arrived and took Kishore and his friend into custody, responding to a neighbor’s complaint.

Allegations of forced conversion led to the detention of Kishore and Raj Kumar, as per Pyare Lal, a Christian leader in Uttar Pradesh. Lal mentioned conversing with the Station Head Officer (SHO) who informed him about the charges under various sections of the Code Of Criminal Procedure (CrPc) – 151, 107, and 116.

Following their detention, Raj Kishore and Kumar were brought before the Sub-Divisional Magistrate on Monday and subsequently released, although the legal proceedings against them will continue.

Bhagwanti, Raj Kishore’s wife, vehemently denied any conversion activities taking place in their household. According to an account provided by an anonymous source linked to the family, Bhagwanti clarified that her husband and some acquaintances were peacefully praying when the police, acting on what she termed a “false complaint,” detained them.

During the prayer session, a group of five to six policemen entered their home, disrupted their religious observance, and started recording videos of their worship. When objections were raised, the officers allegedly used abusive language before leaving the premises.

Later, the police returned, apprehended Raj Kishore and Raj Kumar, and took them into custody without an inquiry or allowing them to present their side of the story.

In defense of their fundamental right to religious freedom, Bhagwanti invoked Article 25 of the Indian Constitution, asserting their entitlement to worship and read religious scriptures of their choosing.

While relieved that Kishore and Kumar were released by the SDM on Monday, Bhagwanti expressed her distress over the incident and emphasized the importance of upholding their constitutional rights, especially in matters of religious practice.
