They are holding their breath.

On Tuesday, over a billion people, including 26 million Christians in the world’s most populous nation, will tune in to watch the outcome of the national elections. While exit polls indicate a likely third consecutive term for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Christians are hoping for relief after enduring heightened attacks under the Hindu nationalist government over the past three years.

Exit polls predict that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will maintain power, securing over 350 of the 543 seats. This forecast contrasts with the prevailing pessimism among BJP members and a surge in confidence within the opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), led by the Congress Party, during the seven-phase elections from April 19 to June 1.

Despite the exit polls favoring the BJP, opposition leaders remain optimistic about challenging the ruling government. Rahul Gandhi and other Congress Party leaders dismissed the exit polls as misleading and criticized them as manipulated. Concerns over potential vote counting manipulation have been raised by various opposition figures, including Akhilesh Yadav, the chief of the Samajwadi Party.

There are also concerns about the impartiality of the Election Commission of India, especially after legislative changes made by the BJP government regarding the appointment process for election commissioners. Additionally, the BJP’s use of religion in campaign speeches, despite legal restrictions, has gone unchecked by the Election Commission, despite numerous complaints.

Moreover, the introduction of electoral bonds by the BJP government has sparked controversy over transparency and potential money laundering. The BJP has received a significant portion of these bonds, raising questions about the fairness of campaign financing.

Furthermore, the BJP’s tenure has seen a rise in violence against minority communities, particularly Christians and Muslims. This disturbing trend has been documented by various organizations, with incidents of violence increasing each year. India’s shift towards authoritarianism has also been noted by international observers, with concerns that a BJP victory could further exacerbate attacks on minority groups and consolidate Modi’s authoritarian governance style.
