This is outrageous.
Three prominent Christian voices have criticized NBA star Steph Curry for his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election, citing her stance on abortion as a key issue. These figures, all outspoken on matters of faith and abortion, expressed disappointment in Curry’s public support for Harris.
In a column for The Christian Post, Ryan Bomberger, co-founder of The Radiance Foundation, condemned Curry’s position. Bomberger, who was born after his mother chose life despite being a victim of rape, described Curry’s endorsement as “tragic.” In an interview, Curry stated that Harris’s leadership on women’s rights, particularly the right to choose, was a major factor in his decision, emphasizing the importance of women having control over their own bodies.
Bomberger noted the deep impact of Curry’s influence, especially given his large following and status as a professing Christian. He expressed regret that Curry, whose own mother wrote about her decision against abortion in her memoir, would support a candidate whose stance conflicts with those beliefs. Bomberger’s sentiments were echoed by bestselling author Eric Metaxas, who blamed “seeker-friendly” churches for allowing Christians to adopt secular views on divisive topics like abortion.
However, former NFL player Benjamin Watson took a more measured approach. While many were disappointed by Curry’s support for abortion rights, Watson wasn’t surprised, urging Christians to continue spreading truth. He highlighted the importance of engaging with people like Curry in a positive way, rather than rebuking them. This marked a key difference in how some Christian figures chose to address Curry’s endorsement.
Curry had not previously taken a public stance on abortion, and in a 2022 interview, he mentioned that he didn’t identify strictly as either pro-choice or pro-life. This neutrality, however, shifted after the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, as Curry began expressing stronger views on the subject.
