Netflix is under fire.

An animated Christmas movie on Netflix, That Christmas, has caused controversy due to a scene where children perform a modernized version of the Nativity story, which includes a Madonna song. The film, based on a series of children’s books by Richard Curtis, who also co-wrote the movie, features a group of children and a teenager named Bernadette rewriting the traditional Nativity. In their version, Jesus is depicted as a “cool dude” and “hipster,” and the story includes modern elements like climate change and pop songs. One key moment involves Mary singing Madonna’s 1986 song “Papa Don’t Preach,” a song about a woman deciding against abortion.

In this revised Nativity production, instead of the traditional Nativity props, the shepherds herd vegetables, and the wise men are replaced by three wise women. Mary’s character sings the Madonna song while holding a watermelon, meant to represent baby Jesus. The production takes a comedic turn when a student accidentally drops the watermelon, causing it to splatter on the ground. After the show, some adults criticize the performance, suggesting that humor and the Nativity don’t mix.

The scene has sparked strong reactions online, with some critics accusing the film of mocking the Nativity story. Mary-Logan Miske, a pro-life advocate, criticized the movie for crossing a line in its treatment of the biblical narrative. Blaze contributor Allen Mashburn also voiced concerns, arguing that the film promotes “woke ideologies” through its emphasis on climate change and other modern themes. He suggested that the movie’s content encourages viewers to be cautious about the types of media they consume.

Madonna’s involvement in the controversy is also notable, as her past statements about abortion have drawn criticism. In a 2019 interview, the singer, who has a Catholic background, suggested that Jesus would support a woman’s right to choose regarding abortion, further polarizing opinions about her portrayal of Christianity in her music.

Netflix has not commented on the backlash or the controversial scene in the movie.
