Following the Baltimore Ravens’ triumph, securing their 11th win of the season and leading the AFC, Coach John Harbaugh took a moment to share his faith in Jesus Christ after the 37-31 victory against the Los Angeles Rams.

In his 16th year as the Ravens’ head coach and having guided them to victory in Super Bowl XLVII, Harbaugh began his post-game press conference by acknowledging the Rams’ commendable effort in a hard-fought game. However, he swiftly shifted the focus to a more profound message he had conveyed to his team earlier—the significance of the Advent season.

Harbaugh emphasized the temporal nature of life, urging his players to recognize the unique moment they were living in. He spoke about December football having a special meaning, serving as preparation for significant events yet to unfold. Connecting this to the Advent season, he explained its Latin origin, “adventus,” which signifies anticipation and preparation for the coming of the Savior.

The game itself was a nail-biter, extending into overtime, where the Ravens secured the win with a spectacular 76-yard punt return by wide receiver Tylan Wallace. Harbaugh’s exuberant sideline celebration raised questions during the press conference. When asked about it, he attributed the reminder to shake hands with Rams coach Sean McVay to a prompting from within—an internal prompting that he attributed to a higher source.

Harbaugh, raised in a Catholic home along with his brother Jim Harbaugh, hasn’t shied away from expressing his Christian faith. He acknowledges his regular attendance at mass and his involvement with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. In a Sports Spectrum podcast interview, Harbaugh defined success as alignment with God, emphasizing the importance of being connected and filled with the Holy Spirit.

The coach spoke about his personal journey with faith, revealing that he fully committed his life to Christ during his freshman year at Miami University in Ohio. Reflecting on the historical evidence of Christ’s resurrection, he highlighted the unwavering commitment of early believers, even to the point of martyrdom, as a powerful testament to the truth of Christianity.

In essence, Harbaugh’s faith is deeply intertwined with his coaching philosophy, grounded in trust in God’s providence and a belief in being guided by a higher purpose.
