The hospital wants to set things straight.

A healthcare system based in Georgia is refuting allegations of prohibiting Gideons International from distributing Bibles within its facilities under the guise of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Reports surfaced, citing unnamed sources familiar with the situation, claiming that Phoebe Putney Health System, a prominent healthcare provider in the state, had been restricting the presence of Gideons and their Bibles for several months.

The organization, established in 1899, describes itself as a group of Christian professionals dedicated to distributing Scriptures strategically. They are renowned for placing Bibles in various locations, including hotel rooms, having distributed over 2 billion copies throughout their existence.

Allegations against Phoebe Putney Health System arose amidst a purported DEI drive within the organization, led by CEO Scott Steiner, who has been at the helm since 2019. Steiner’s leadership aligns with the Georgia Diversity Council, emphasizing diversity best practices and leadership development in the state. Reports suggest that the purported ban on Gideons aligns with this DEI initiative.

In response to the allegations, Ben Smith, Phoebe’s director of public relations and communications, vehemently denied any anti-Christian sentiment within the organization. He directed attention to a video statement by Steiner, dismissing the accusations as false and offensive. Steiner criticized the source of the allegations, The Daily Wire, accusing it of sensationalism.

Steiner clarified that while Phoebe does not grant unrestricted access to outside groups like the local Gideons chapter, they do provide Bibles to anyone who requests them. He emphasized the importance of patient privacy and safety, noting that certain items, including books, are restricted from patient rooms for infection control purposes.

Despite the controversy, Steiner underscored Phoebe’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity. He highlighted the organization’s daily devotional and prayer sessions, as well as its invocation ceremonies and prayer hotline, as evidence of their support for individuals of all backgrounds and beliefs.

Steiner, acknowledging his own demographic background, emphasized the necessity of diversity in effectively serving the community. He reiterated Phoebe’s dedication to being a welcoming environment for everyone and pledged to continue their efforts to improve the lives of all they serve, without discrimination based on religion or any other factor.
