Prominent Elders Deliver Blunt Verdict On IHOPKC Founder

A group of influential Charismatic leaders, led by theologian and media figure Michael Brown, have publicly declared International House of Prayer Kansas City (IHOPKC) founder Mike Bickle as “unfit” for ministry. This statement, published on Brown’s “Line of Fire” radio program website, cites concerns over alleged cult-like tendencies within the 24/7 prayer ministry and mounting evidence, including reports of clergy sexual abuse by Bickle. One such testimony came from Tammy Woods, who accused Bickle of grooming and sexually abusing her when she was just 14 years old.

The group expressed deep sorrow for those affected by Bickle’s alleged actions, highlighting the profound impact on individuals’ faith and the broader spiritual community. They emphasized the seriousness of clergy sexual abuse and concluded that Bickle, regardless of repentance, is unfit for public ministry. This stance was taken after considering various reports and testimonies, including Bickle’s acknowledgment that his resignation from ministry could be prolonged or permanent.

Woods’ account surfaced amidst mounting abuse allegations, prompting Bickle to reportedly plan a video response with his wife, Diane. Former IHOPKC staffer Ben Anderson shared details of this plan, including allegations that Bickle made promises to his alleged victims about his future with them. Woods recounted instances of abuse, which she claims occurred in multiple locations, including Bickle’s car, her home, the church, and his office. She described incidents of unwanted sexual contact, highlighting the emotional distress caused by the abuse.

The group’s statement also addressed broader concerns within IHOPKC, noting deficiencies in addressing serious sins and a lack of formal accountability structures. While acknowledging IHOPKC’s positive contributions, they called for reforms to address emerging cult-like tendencies and enhance accountability. They emphasized the need to avoid idolizing spiritual leaders and stressed the importance of humility and servant leadership within the Christian community.

Overall, the Charismatic leaders’ statement reflects a collective effort to address serious allegations and promote accountability within the ministry. They underscore the gravity of clergy sexual abuse and advocate for measures to prevent such misconduct in the future.
