American Missionaries’ Cry For Help Echoes From Haiti

Amidst the ongoing power struggle in Haiti following Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s announced resignation amid escalating violence, an American missionary and her adopted children find themselves in a perilous situation, trapped in the country and appealing for assistance and prayers as they await evacuation.

Ryan and Jill Dolan, along with their children, have dedicated themselves to missionary work in Haiti since 2013 through their Love A Neighbor ministry, in collaboration with Camano Chapel in Washington state, their sending church.

However, a recent attempt to leave the country ended in turmoil as armed gangs seized control of the Port-au-Prince airport, preventing Jill Dolan and four of their adopted children from departing. Stranded in a small hotel amidst rampant gang violence, they face an uncertain and dangerous situation, compounded by the closure of all roads leading in and out of the capital city.

While Ryan Dolan and one of their children managed to return to the United States before the unrest escalated, their family members remain trapped in Haiti. Despite efforts to seek assistance from the U.S. Embassy, Jill Dolan expresses deep concern for their safety amid the escalating chaos.

The severity of the situation is underscored by the U.S. State Department’s Level 4 travel advisory for Haiti, warning against travel to the nation due to kidnapping, crime, civil unrest, and poor healthcare infrastructure. Despite these risks, missionaries like the Dolans and others, including acclaimed author Mitch Albom, have continued their work in Haiti.

Albom himself recently experienced the perilous conditions firsthand but was fortunate to be among those evacuated from Port-au-Prince with the assistance of U.S. Representative Lisa McClain.

Meanwhile, other missionaries, such as Reverend Steven Svendsen, find themselves trapped in Haiti, exploring alternative evacuation options amidst the turmoil. Svendsen’s resilience in the face of adversity reflects the determination of missionaries to continue their humanitarian work despite the challenges.

As the Dolan family grapples with the financial strain of their unexpected predicament, they appeal for both financial assistance and prayers from the community. Contributions can be made to their home church, Camano Chapel, to support them during this trying time.

The dire circumstances in Haiti serve as a stark reminder of the urgency of humanitarian aid and international intervention to alleviate the suffering of those affected by conflict and instability. The resilience and perseverance of missionaries like the Dolans highlight the unwavering commitment to their mission despite the risks they face.
