Football Chaplain Discusses Role Of Prayer In Team Dynamics

Johnny Shelton, the chaplain for the Baltimore Ravens and a former football player, recently shared insights into his role ministering to NFL players, including engaging in pre-game prayers. In an interview with “TODAY” show correspondent Savannah Sellers, Shelton discussed his life and responsibilities as the in-house NFL chaplain, a position he has held with the Ravens since 2013.

Shelton expressed gratitude for the relative anonymity of NFL chaplains, highlighting the importance of being able to “stay out of the way” while remaining “present” and “hardworking.” On game days and during practices, Shelton is a familiar presence on the sidelines, making himself available for prayers or words of wisdom as needed. He described conducting a prayer walk around the field before every practice.

In addition to pre-game prayers, Shelton leads the team in opening prayers, focusing on safety, mental clarity, and the ability to concentrate on the task at hand. As the team chaplain, he organizes Bible studies for players, coaches, and their families, while also maintaining an open-door policy for confidential counseling. Shelton addresses a range of issues players bring to him, including football-related pressure, family dynamics, and relationship challenges.

Ravens defensive back Marlon Humphrey attested to Shelton’s role in addressing broader life topics, stating that discussions with Shelton often revolve around life rather than solely football. Shelton emphasized that his door is open to all players, irrespective of their faith background, emphasizing a commitment to love and support rather than seeking to disciple everyone.

Shelton’s personal journey, marked by a challenging upbringing with an absentee father, led him to find stability through church and sports. After a turning point in his junior year at Southeast Missouri State University, where he embraced Christianity, Shelton transitioned into ministry. Before joining the Ravens in 2013, he served with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Shelton, driven by a passion to positively impact coaches and athletes, expressed his dedication to sharing the love of Christ and offering honest guidance. As the Ravens enter the playoffs with a 13-4 record and the No. 1 seed in the AFC, Shelton’s role remains integral in providing spiritual support to the team.
