Christian Heroes Feed Thousands In Need

Ken Anderson rode out Hurricane Beryl in his home near Jones Creek, south of Houston, and reported extensive damage from the storm. “We were hit harder than anyone else, with thousands of trees down,” he said.

One of these fallen trees landed on Anderson’s house, extending across it but fortunately not destroying it. John Weber, a volunteer with Texans on Mission (TXM) and leader of the TXM San Antonio team, noted the severity of the damage. “The tree was massive, but thankfully, it didn’t demolish the house,” Weber explained. The team began working on Monday to remove the tree, while Anderson’s family, including a baby, took refuge in the damaged house due to power outages elsewhere.

Anderson expressed his gratitude for the volunteers, acknowledging that their help was crucial, especially given his recent heart attack. “These guys are fantastic,” he said, emphasizing that he couldn’t manage the cleanup on his own. “We need all the assistance we can get.”

Weber highlighted the importance of addressing both physical and spiritual needs in disaster relief. “Our team is trained to handle these situations and provide support where it’s needed most,” he said. The volunteers faced tough conditions, including heat, humidity, and mosquitoes, as they worked across Brazoria County to clear debris, repair roofs, and respond to requests for help.

The First Baptist Church in Brazoria serves as the main hub for TXM’s efforts in the hurricane-affected areas. Chainsaw crews focus on critical tasks, such as removing trees that have fallen on homes or vehicles and clearing access routes.

As the hurricane caused widespread power outages, the TXM State Feeding Unit provided crucial support by preparing and distributing over 60,000 meals across 26 locations in Houston. Sugar Land Baptist Church also contributed by assembling approximately 3,500 sack lunches for preschoolers in need. One of the meals reached an elderly woman who had been without food for two days due to the power outage. David Wells, TXM Disaster Relief director, underscored the significance of the relief efforts. “This is a testament to the body of Christ working together to deliver help, hope, and healing in His name,” Wells said, emphasizing the mission to meet both physical and spiritual needs.
