It’s aimed at college students.

An organization dedicated to safeguarding religious freedom has introduced a new initiative to bolster such rights on college campuses, addressing increasing intolerance and antisemitism.

Last week, the Religious Freedom Institute (RFI) announced the launch of the Campus Faith Alliance, a group that will be present at various universities beginning this fall semester.

According to RFI President David Trimble, the Campus Faith Alliance was established to tackle the “growing challenges faced by students of faith at American colleges.” Trimble explained in an email to The Christian Post that religious student groups are united by a common cause to protect religious freedom, grounded in a mutual respect for human dignity. He added that a coalition among these groups on campus could better address threats to their religious liberties.

Trimble noted that the surge in campus unrest and antisemitism, particularly at prestigious universities last spring, reinforced the need for the Campus Faith Alliance. He believes this initiative could counteract some of the harmful influences contributing to this unrest. Trimble also pointed out that there are subtle pressures that impede students from practicing their faith and learning to model peaceful pluralism during their formative years.

“Religious freedom does not rely on the mistaken belief that all religions are equally true but rather on the principle that everyone is equal in dignity and has the right to pursue answers to fundamental questions without fear of violence, coercion, or intimidation,” Trimble said.

He emphasized that true religious freedom allows for disagreement on profound issues while maintaining respect for each individual’s dignity. This principle, Trimble argued, is crucial for many campuses today, and the Campus Faith Alliance aims to foster this understanding.

The Alliance will initially launch pilot chapters at several schools, with RFI coordinating events alongside other religious student organizations on campus.

Trimble aims to expand the Alliance by showcasing the success of these pilot sites in supporting genuine religious student groups at various colleges.

He expressed concern that people of faith are increasingly marginalized in American society, a trend that is particularly pronounced on public university campuses. Trimble cited governmental regulations and institutional policies as ongoing challenges to religious groups’ rights to organize and express their beliefs.

Furthermore, he criticized the rising ideology of radical individual autonomy, which he believes undermines traditional American values of human dignity and liberty. Trimble argued that this ideology is prevalent on many secular campuses and conflicts with the perspectives held by religious students.

Founded in 2016 by a group of college academics, the RFI aims to promote religious freedom globally and support those persecuted for their beliefs.
