It has become viral.
The Fiji Olympic team, including athletes, coaches, and staff, has received widespread social media attention for their harmonious hymn singing during worship sessions in Paris’ Olympic Village. Australian water polo player Matilda Kearns, who was nearby in the Oceania teams’ building, posted videos on Instagram of the Fijian athletes worshipping, which garnered significant attention and thousands of likes. Kearns praised the beautiful singing and shared her appreciation for being close to the source of the music.
Kearns noted the remarkable view from her spot in the village, describing the ongoing worship music as a highlight. Her posts, featuring the hymn “Mo Ravi Vei Jisu,” received substantial engagement, with one video earning over 559,000 likes and another exceeding 600,000 likes. The hymn, which means “Put your trust in the Lord, and He will guide your way,” resonated with many viewers, who were moved by the Fijians’ faith and musical talent.
In Fijian culture, where about 64% of the population is Christian, faith is often expressed through worship songs. Team Fiji shared a video on their Facebook page of their members singing the hymn during a Sunday service. The early morning singing by the Fijian rugby players also delighted athletes and staff from other teams, who found the music beautiful and not disruptive despite the early hour.
The Fijian men’s rugby team has a history of notable achievements, including winning gold medals in the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games and a silver medal this year. Following their 2020 victory, they sang the hymn “E Da Sa Qaqa,” which translates to “We have overcome, by the blood of the Lamb, in the Word of the Lord, we have overcome.” This hymn underscores their belief in a loving and providing God.
Captain Jerry Tuwai emphasized that the team’s daily routine includes starting and ending with prayers and songs. He explained that their hymn speaks to God’s love and generosity, even when they fall short. This practice reflects the deep faith and unity within the team, contributing to their strength and success.
