A Christian TikToker called him out.
In a recent TikTok video, Maygan Bryant, a Christian influencer with a significant following, addressed Pastor Michael “Mike” Todd from Transformation Church in Tulsa, USA, regarding his unconventional preaching style. Bryant, known for her candid discussions on matters of faith, voiced her concerns about Todd’s recent sermon antics, particularly his use of syrup and whipped cream on the Bible during a message titled “Fit To Finish.”
During Todd’s sermon in January, which aimed to emphasize the importance of treating one’s body as a temple of the Holy Spirit, he surprised many by throwing Cheetos, eggs, and other junk food onto the stage. This demonstration was meant to illustrate the significance of dietary choices. The culmination of the sermon occurred when Todd poured syrup and whipped cream over the Bible, eliciting shocked reactions from the audience.
Bryant, while understanding the message Todd intended to convey, criticized his extreme approach, fearing it could deter potential newcomers to the faith. She highlighted the hypothetical situation of inviting a friend or family member to church only to witness such unconventional theatrics.
While Bryant acknowledged the analogy Todd was trying to make, she argued that such dramatic displays were unnecessary, insisting that the same point could have been effectively communicated without resorting to such tactics. Bryant, who once admired Todd’s leadership, now feels he has crossed boundaries during his sermons.
She referenced Todd’s controversial “spit sermon” in 2022, where he spat on a church attendee’s eye onstage in an attempt to reenact a biblical healing scene. Bryant also expressed disapproval of Todd’s extravagant Easter play in 2023, which featured performances by rappers and singers reciting scripture.
In response to Bryant’s critique, TikTok users echoed similar sentiments, questioning Todd’s role as a preacher versus a performer, with some even labeling him a “false prophet.”
In defense of his sermons, Todd has acknowledged their unconventional nature but maintains his intention to use creativity to engage and impart the word of God effectively.
