The Bible is being auctioned.

A historic artifact linked to one of America’s most tragic moments, the Bible that accompanied former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis in the aftermath of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in November 1963, has found its way to auction. Listed by Heritage Auctions, a prominent figure in the collectibles auction world, this unique item, titled “John F. Kennedy: ‘Inauguration’ Bible Used by Jackie Kennedy for JFK’s Funeral Service,” has garnered significant attention with bidding currently standing at $36,000. The auction is scheduled to conclude on Friday.

Following President Kennedy’s untimely death, Jacqueline Kennedy, who later passed away in 1994 from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, left a poignant message within the Bible, marking its significance in their shared grief. The inscription, dated 1963, recalls the pivotal role the Bible played in selecting the passage from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8, which was read at JFK’s funeral service. This particular passage, highlighted on page 740, holds a profound connection to the somber occasion.

Originally gifted by Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston from 1944 to 1970, this New Catholic Edition Illustrated Bible bears witness to its historical journey. Measuring 5.75 by 8.25 inches, the Bible boasts a gold-stamped cover commemorating JFK’s inauguration on January 20, 1961. Despite minor discoloration on the bookplate due to adhesive, the auctioneer assures its overall excellent condition.

With a backstory intertwined with personal connections and historical significance, the Bible’s provenance adds layers to its allure. The consignor’s mother, who served under Cardinal Cushing, inherited numerous artifacts following his passing. Highlighting Mrs. Kennedy’s close spiritual bond with the Cardinal, the auction listing emphasizes the profound ties surrounding this artifact.

Curtis Lindner, Americana Director at Heritage Auctions, has remarked on the potential value of this piece of history, suggesting it could command up to $50,000. Lindner points to previous Kennedy-related artifacts, such as rocking chairs owned by the late president, which have fetched substantial sums, exceeding $400,000. In the realm of historical memorabilia, each item serves as a tangible link to the past, preserving the legacy of those who shaped the course of history.
