He described it as a ‘bad sermon.’

During a Sunday appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Senator Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) defended President Joe Biden’s recent debate performance, which had received widespread criticism. When asked whether Biden should step down as the presumptive Democratic nominee due to concerns about his cognitive abilities, Warnock firmly rejected the idea, saying, “Absolutely not.”

Warnock, who has been the senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta since 2005, compared Biden’s debate performance to some of his own less successful sermons. He explained, “There have been more than a few Sundays when I wish I had delivered a better sermon. But my job is to embody the message and serve the people, just as Joe Biden has done throughout his public service.”

He stressed that Biden has shown dedication and character throughout his career, saying, “Over the last four years and his entire life of public service, Joe Biden has consistently shown up for the American people. He has demonstrated his character and resilience, both in his professional and personal life.”

When questioned about whether Biden should take a cognitive test, Warnock sidestepped by stating he is “not a doctor.” Despite Biden’s faltering performance in the debate against former President Donald Trump, which raised concerns about his cognitive abilities, Warnock and other prominent Democrats have rallied around Biden, portraying the debate as a minor hiccup in his otherwise strong presidency.

Former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton also expressed support for Biden, emphasizing his achievements and leadership over the past three years. Obama tweeted that poor debate performances happen, but what matters is Biden’s lifelong dedication to ordinary people. Clinton highlighted Biden’s accomplishments in job creation, climate action, and reducing inflation, crediting him with steady leadership during challenging times. First Lady Jill Biden told Vogue that the debate would not define her husband’s presidency, affirming their commitment to continue their efforts. Meanwhile, reports suggest that despite public endorsements, there is internal concern about Biden’s chances in the upcoming election.
