He was caught in the act.

John David Boggs, a 50-year-old roofer and shark fisherman from Shepherdsville, Kentucky, has been arrested on charges of stealing nearly $195,000 from a church in Hodgenville. He was hired to replace the church’s roof but allegedly failed to begin the work after receiving the payment. The arrest occurred with the help of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office in Florida, who assisted in locating and extraditing him to Kentucky for the charges.

Boggs operates a roofing business called My Affordable Roof, which was established in 2017. His company, based in Fort Myers, Florida, has been the subject of several complaints from customers who reported incomplete roofing projects. In 2019, the company filed for bankruptcy, citing the need to restructure in order to complete outstanding jobs and protect customers from further harm. However, despite these efforts, the company’s reputation suffered due to the unresolved issues.

Additionally, Boggs faced legal trouble in 2020 when he and his business partner, Amanda Christine Lairsey, were arrested in Alabama for defrauding customers. They were accused of taking payments for roofing jobs in Cullman County, following a hailstorm, but leaving many projects unfinished. Authorities estimated the financial losses for the victims in Cullman County at approximately $167,000. The pair was charged with multiple counts of theft.

Boggs had a history of involvement in both roofing and shark fishing, with a notable incident involving his shark fishing business on Marco Island, Florida. Despite his legal troubles, he continued his activities in both fields until his arrest. He now faces legal proceedings in Kentucky related to the stolen church funds, with a court date set for November 25.

The case highlights ongoing issues within Boggs’ roofing business, as well as his history of legal challenges. His business’ bankruptcy filing and the allegations of theft from multiple victims underscore the difficulties he faced in managing his company and maintaining customer trust.
