They are performing the story of Daniel.
The tale of Daniel from the Old Testament, marked by his steadfast faith despite facing perilous trials such as the lion’s den and his prophetic dreams, resonates deeply in today’s climate of global unrest and division. Jacob Cummings, who portrays Daniel in Sight & Sound’s latest stage production, emphasizes the contemporary relevance of this ancient story.
Cummings, reflecting on the significance of Daniel’s narrative, shared with The Christian Post that the story’s relevance is particularly striking given the current societal and global tensions. “Daniel’s experience speaks volumes about maintaining faithfulness in a world that seems increasingly divided,” Cummings remarked. “His story demonstrates that one can remain devoted to God even when surrounded by secular influences, and serve faithfully in any position God places you.”
Sight & Sound Theatres, established in 1976, has become renowned for its immersive and inspirational performances, drawing large audiences to its venues in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Branson, Missouri. Their productions, including stories like Joseph, Moses, and Jesus, are celebrated for their impressive sets, live animals, and engaging performances.
Their latest production, “Daniel,” which began development in 2021 and premiered in March, explores the biblical figure’s prophetic visions and trials. Featuring original music and dramatic special effects, the production is anchored by the verse from Daniel 12:3, which promises that “those who lead others to righteousness will shine like the stars in the heavens forever.”
The production depicts Daniel’s journey from his homeland to the opulent and shifting Babylonian empire, where he faces numerous challenges, from the fiery furnace to the lion’s den. Cummings praised the creative team’s efforts in bringing these dramatic moments to life, noting, “Our team has done an outstanding job of portraying these pivotal scenes. The direction has been meticulous, and the adaptation makes the complex story accessible for audiences of all ages. Even my young daughter enjoys watching it.”
However, embodying Daniel on stage presented its own challenges for Cummings, including dealing with vocal strain and personal spiritual growth. He reflected on how these trials have strengthened his faith, stating, “The Lord has used these challenges to show His faithfulness. My own faith has grown immensely through this process.”
Cummings observed that many audience members, particularly those from the Church, leave feeling inspired to deepen their faith. “The message of the show seems to resonate strongly, encouraging people to remain faithful and steadfast,” he noted.
Looking ahead, Cummings hopes that Sight & Sound will explore New Testament stories in future productions. “I would love to see stories from the New Testament, such as the life of Paul or events from Pentecost,” he said.
For now, Cummings hopes Daniel’s story serves as a source of encouragement for Christians facing a rapidly changing world. “I believe our world is struggling with its identity,” he said. “I hope that through this production, people are reminded of their identity in Christ and encouraged to remain steadfast in their faith, no matter the pressures they face.”
