He experienced a devastating loss.

In response to a grieving mother’s question about why God allowed her unborn child to die, theologian John Piper offered biblical insights on God’s sovereignty, regret, and forgiveness. The mother, who delayed induced labor only to lose her baby, shared feelings of guilt and questioned her faith. She expressed that she felt responsible for the baby’s death and struggled with doubt and prayer. Piper aimed to provide comfort through a series of points that emphasized trust in God’s plan.

Piper began by noting that it is impossible to know whether the mother’s decision directly caused the baby’s death, as there are many unknown factors involved. He stressed that while the situation is painful, God’s control over life and death is ultimately comforting. Referencing James 4:15, Piper highlighted the belief that all life is in God’s hands and that trusting in His sovereignty can bring peace even in difficult circumstances.

He drew from the biblical story of Job, who continued to worship God despite great loss, to assure the mother that her baby’s life was not in vain. Piper emphasized that God is always working in ways we cannot see and that His purposes are for the good of those who trust Him. He also offered hope by affirming that the baby’s life continues in eternity, and the mother will be reunited with her child if she remains faithful.

Piper addressed the feelings of regret the mother experienced, acknowledging that living with regret is challenging but does not have to be overwhelming. He pointed to the Apostle Paul, who also lived with regret but found strength and purpose in God’s mercy. Piper reassured the mother that God is always ready to forgive and that confession brings cleansing and peace, referencing 1 John 1:9.

Finally, Piper encouraged the mother to stay steadfast in her faith despite the pain she was enduring. He reminded her that God has a good purpose in all suffering and that trusting in Him will lead to eventual healing. Quoting Psalm 34:18, Piper concluded with a message of hope, reminding the mother that God is near to the brokenhearted and will deliver her through her grief in His own time.
