Christian Nonprofit Unveils Biggest Hospital Expansion Ever

CURE International, a U.S.-based Christian nonprofit, has initiated its largest hospital expansion to date by breaking ground on a 22,000-square-foot, three-story facility in Ethiopia. This new state-of-the-art building signifies a major milestone in the organization’s 25-year mission to assist children with treatable disabilities. The expanded facility will include five operating rooms, seven examination rooms, and 22 patient beds, enabling it to serve around 5,000 patients annually.

The expansion project has a budget of $12.5 million, funded in part by The Rees-Jones Foundation, which is covering construction and furnishing costs. Additionally, USAID has provided medical equipment. Justin Narducci, CEO of CURE International, emphasized the urgent need for high-quality medical care in Ethiopia, where the organization has been active since 2008. CURE hospitals offer no-cost surgical interventions for various conditions, including cleft lip/palate and clubfoot.

The design of the new facility allows for future growth, as its foundation can support two additional floors, which could add up to 15,000 square feet for patient recovery rooms. Adey Abate, executive director of CURE Ethiopia, highlighted the emotional toll of their work, noting the many children waiting for treatment behind each patient they serve.

Trevor Rees-Jones, co-founder of The Rees-Jones Foundation, expressed his family’s dedication to supporting the healthcare of Ethiopian children. He stressed that every child deserves love and care, reaffirming the foundation’s commitment to this cause. The new hospital is anticipated to open its doors in 2026.

Since its inception in 1998, CURE International has conducted over 350,000 surgeries and facilitated 5.5 million patient visits. Established in Addis Ababa in 2008, CURE Ethiopia performs more than 3,000 surgeries annually and functions as a teaching hospital, partnering with the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) to provide training for future surgeons and healthcare professionals.
