Evangelicals Struggle With Platforms They Deem Toxic

A recent study from Infinity Concepts and Grey Matter Research has uncovered that although many Evangelicals see social media as potentially harmful to their faith, a large number still actively use these platforms. The report, titled Helpful or Harmful? Evangelicals and Social Media, is based on a survey of 1,039 Evangelical Protestants conducted earlier this year. The findings suggest that the more spiritually engaged individuals are, the more likely they are to engage with social media.

The survey shows that Evangelicals, like the wider American public, predominantly use Facebook, with 81% reporting usage, followed by YouTube (71%), Instagram (45%), TikTok (35%), and Pinterest (28%). Despite concerns about the negative impact of social media, over half (54%) of Evangelicals continue to participate in these online platforms. The primary reasons for their concerns include harmful content, such as dangerous ideologies and worldly distractions, which they believe make social media more harmful than helpful.

Interestingly, while 58% of Evangelicals believe social media has a detrimental effect on Christianity, 42% see it as beneficial. Among those who view it positively, the ability to use social media for evangelism stands out as the biggest advantage, with 47% citing this as a key benefit. Others appreciate the access to Christian content and the opportunity to form supportive online communities.

The report highlights that social media, like any tool, can serve both beneficial and harmful purposes. It can be used to spread the Gospel, foster community, and encourage believers. However, it can also lead to distractions, misinformation, and the spread of negative influences. The study emphasizes that the impact of social media depends largely on how it is used.

While acknowledging the challenges posed by these platforms, the report also underscores the potential benefits social media can offer Evangelicals. Researchers encourage church leaders to guide their congregations in using social media with care and purpose. By approaching these platforms thoughtfully, Evangelicals can use social media to make a positive difference in the digital space while avoiding its pitfalls.
