Political Activists Speak About How Faith Kept Them Strong
Matt Schlapp, chairman of The American Conservative Union (ACU), and his wife, Mercedes, have attributed their resilience during allegations of sexual misconduct to their faith in God. In response to reaching a $480,000 settlement stemming from litigation related to these allegations, the Schlapps released a statement affirming their innocence and condemning what they perceive as a biased onslaught from left-leaning media.
They asserted that despite the ordeal, their family has emerged stronger, crediting their faith for sustaining them through challenging times. Their statement also underscored a newfound clarity on life’s priorities, emphasizing the importance of faith, family, and friends.
Moreover, the Schlapps condemned what they described as a concerted effort by the political left to silence and discredit conservatives. They highlighted the prevalence of such tactics in mainstream and social media, as well as the legal system.
Their statement coincided with reports that Carlton Huffman, who filed the lawsuit alleging sexual misconduct against Matt Schlapp, received a settlement. The lawsuit detailed claims of inappropriate conduct during an outing with Schlapp, including unwanted physical contact and encouragement to consume alcohol while driving.
Additionally, the lawsuit included allegations against Mrs. Schlapp, accusing her of making defamatory statements against the plaintiff. Despite the legal proceedings, the Schlapps maintain their innocence and assert that the claims against them were based on misunderstandings.
Huffman, who initially filed anonymously, later went public with his identity. As part of the settlement, Huffman acknowledged that his claims were a result of misunderstanding and expressed regret for any pain caused to the Schlapp family.
The Schlapps’ legal team clarified that neither the Schlapps nor the ACU made any payments to Huffman as part of the settlement, which was covered by insurance. The ACU, known for organizing the Conservative Political Action Conference, continues its advocacy amid the resolution of this legal matter.
