Christian’s 4.5-Year Sentence Sends Shockwaves
In a disconcerting turn of events, Nay Y Blang, a Montagnard Christian from Vietnam, has been handed a 4.5-year prison sentence on charges of “secession and incitement.” His alleged crime revolves around the organization of prayer meetings at his residence. This verdict is emblematic of the persisting tensions between religious practices and state policies in Vietnam, with a particular impact on the Montagnard minority and their Christian beliefs.
Blang, affiliated with the Central Highlands Evangelical Church of Christ, faced the sentencing without the support of legal representation. The church, not officially recognized by the state, stands accused of undermining national unity through its religious gatherings. Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), a rights group based in the UK, has voiced apprehensions about Blang’s right to practice his faith. They highlighted previous instances of imprisonments and fines for similar reasons.
The glaring absence of due process in Blang’s hearing has raised profound concerns, prompting Mervyn Thomas, the founder of CSW, to underscore the broader implications for religious freedom in Vietnam. Pastor Aga, the church’s founder, decried the sentencing as “unacceptable” and questioned the lack of legal representation during the trial. Blang’s history of facing fines and imprisonment exemplifies the stringent control exercised by the Vietnamese government over religious expression.
The Montagnard community, predominantly Christian, has a historical backdrop of clashes with the Vietnamese government. In a recent mass trial, over 100 Montagnards were convicted on terrorism-related charges following an attack on provincial party offices in Dak Lak. The Ministry of Public Security attributed these arrests to young individuals harboring extreme attitudes incited through the internet. The international community, along with human rights organizations, has censured Vietnam’s treatment of the Montagnards and other minority groups. There is a collective call for enhanced religious freedom and justice in the country governed by the Communist Party.

Sickening but not at all surprising the way the current corrupt Democratic Party administration has weaponized federal government.
