Pastor’s Demise Sends Shockwaves After Fire Disaster
The Northern Virginia community is deeply saddened by the untimely passing of Pastor Kevin Corey, a beloved figure who met a tragic end after sustaining extensive burns encompassing over 60% of his body. This somber event unfolded during a routine document-burning activity at Corey’s residence in Fairfax County on January 30th. Despite valiant attempts to rescue him, Corey succumbed to his injuries after a valiant fight lasting eight agonizing days in the hospital.
At 57 years old, Corey had dedicated himself to serving the community, previously as a youth pastor at Calvary Road Baptist Church in Alexandria and transitioning toward a senior pastor position at another congregation. His daughter, Jenna Guercia, bravely kept the community informed about her father’s condition through poignant updates on social media, eventually sharing the heartbreaking news of his passing.
The accident occurred while Corey was engaged in burning documents in a fire pit in the Newington area of his residence. Witnesses recounted a deafening explosion emanating from Corey’s home, captured on a neighbor’s Ring camera, revealing the moment when a gas can detonated in his grasp, engulfing him in flames. Despite his wife’s swift actions to douse the fire, Corey suffered grievous injuries.
Subsequent to the incident, Corey underwent extensive medical interventions for his burns, but unfortunately, his health deteriorated, culminating in kidney and lung failure. Despite the tireless efforts of medical professionals, Corey ultimately succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a community and family shattered by grief.
In the wake of this tragedy, the community has rallied around the Corey family, demonstrating an outpouring of support by organizing a Meal Train and fundraising initiatives to alleviate the burden of medical expenses and funeral arrangements. In lieu of floral tributes, the family has humbly requested donations be made to the apologetics ministry Answers in Genesis.
