SBC Prepares To Cast Vote For Next President

The Executive Committee of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) has announced plans to vote on a presidential candidate during their upcoming February meeting, aiming to fill a position that has been vacant since 2021. The committee’s search team, led by Chairman Neal Hughes, has diligently considered 30 candidates, conducting thorough due diligence, including references from over 60 individuals across various aspects of SBC life. The candidate, whose name will be disclosed on Feb. 18, has undergone a comprehensive evaluation aligning with the committee’s newly adopted hiring guidelines.

The Executive Committee, consisting of 86 representatives, acts on behalf of the Convention between sessions, overseeing responsibilities such as reviewing financial statements, managing funds for ministries, and handling public relations. The vacant presidential position arose in October 2021 when Pastor Ronnie Floyd resigned amid an investigation into the handling of sexual abuse allegations by SBC leadership. Interim president Willie McLaurin, appointed after Floyd’s resignation, stepped down in August due to false education credentials, leading to the selection of Jonathan Howe as interim president.

The committee’s journey to find a new president involved overcoming challenges, including a vote against appointing Texas Pastor Jared Wellman in May. The process has advanced through phases such as invitation, interview, and investigation, with the final step being the introduction phase. The committee’s commitment to transparency and adherence to thorough evaluation procedures underscores its dedication to selecting a leader who can navigate the complexities of the SBC landscape. The forthcoming vote in February marks a pivotal moment in determining the future leadership of the Executive Committee.
