Former Head Breaks Silence On Cancer Recovery
The former leader of the largest Protestant denomination in the United States, Steve Gaines, shared an encouraging update regarding his battle with cancer, albeit acknowledging ongoing health challenges. Gaines, who serves as the senior pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, Tennessee, revealed the latest developments in a video posted on the church’s YouTube channel.
In the heartfelt message, Gaines expressed gratitude for the support and prayers of his congregation, emphasizing the positive results shown in his recent medical scans. He joyfully announced that the PET scan revealed the absence of cancerous polyps in his lungs, contrasting with previous scans that indicated multiple polyps. Additionally, he shared that the cancer in his rib and kidney has significantly diminished.
Despite these promising developments, Gaines disclosed that his battle with cancer has triggered a resurgence of his myasthenia gravis, a chronic condition characterized by muscle weakness. He explained how the heightened activity of his immune system, stimulated by cancer treatments, has exacerbated his myasthenia gravis symptoms, particularly affecting the muscles in his neck.
Describing his myasthenia gravis as more of a nuisance than a serious threat, Gaines acknowledged the challenges it poses but remained optimistic. He urged his congregation to continue praying for his health while expressing his appreciation for the temporary preachers who stepped in to lead services during his absence.
Gaines concluded the video with gratitude for the support of his congregation and praised the substitute preachers for their dedication. He affirmed his intention to resume preaching on Sunday, highlighting his gratitude for the opportunity to continue serving his community.
The Bellevue Baptist Church’s website provides additional context on Gaines’ extensive ministry experience and personal life. With nearly two decades of service at Bellevue Baptist Church and a longstanding career in pastoral ministry spanning multiple states, Gaines is recognized for his leadership and commitment to his faith. Married with four daughters and 18 grandchildren, Gaines’ dedication to his family and his congregation remains unwavering despite his health challenges.
