Latino Leaders Fight To Restore Trust In Churches
Conservative Hispanic Christian activists gathered at the Faith & Freedom Coalition’s Road to Majority conference in Washington, D.C., to address what they see as a growing disconnect between faith-based values and political affiliations among Hispanics. At a panel titled “Hispanic Voices for Faith and Freedom,” moderated by Nilsa Alvarez, activists discussed their efforts to promote conservative principles within the community amidst what they perceive as increasing support for Democrats and progressive ideologies.
Adianis Morales, representing the Faith & Freedom Coalition in Florida and Puerto Rico, emphasized the pivotal role of faith in guiding political decisions. She highlighted her involvement in opposing what she termed as “radical sex education” in schools, organizing protests and engaging parents to challenge these policies. Morales also stressed the establishment of a Puerto Rican chapter of the coalition, advocating for Hispanics to align more closely with conservative values centered on faith, family, and personal responsibility.
Dorcas Hernandez, founder of “Don’t Mess With Our Kids” in Peru, shared her organization’s efforts to resist progressive policies impacting education and family values. She recounted significant mobilization efforts in Peru that led to substantial political changes, emphasizing the movement’s expansion across Latin America and its recent introduction in the United States. Hernandez’s organization aims to safeguard children from ideological influences in schools and uphold traditional values rooted in faith and family.
Despite these grassroots efforts, exit polling data from recent elections illustrates that a majority of Hispanic voters continue to support Democratic candidates at the national level. In the 2020 presidential election, 65% of Latino voters backed Joe Biden, and in the 2022 midterms, 60% supported Democratic candidates. This disparity underscores ongoing challenges for conservative activists in persuading Hispanics to align their voting patterns more closely with their faith-based values and traditional beliefs.
The discussions at the conference reflected a broader strategy within conservative Christian circles to influence political outcomes and foster a greater understanding of how faith intersects with civic engagement among Hispanic communities. Activists expressed determination to bridge the gap they perceive between church teachings and political allegiances, aiming to strengthen conservative influence in future elections by emphasizing the importance of faith and family in shaping societal values and policy decisions.
