Evangelical Leader Leaves Lasting Legacy
Renowned Evangelical leader Roger Forster, founder of the Ichthus Christian Fellowship, peacefully passed away at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy of nearly 70 years of impactful ministry. His influence extended across evangelism, theology, and pastoral mentorship, making him a distinctive figure in the Christian community.
Born in a time distant from the digital era, Forster underwent a significant spiritual awakening during his university years at Cambridge, where he studied both math and theology. His experiences in the Royal Air Force contributed to shaping his character and prepared him for a lifelong dedication to evangelism. In 1974, alongside his wife Faith, Forster established Ichthus with the vision of nurturing disciples of Christ. What started as a modest gathering of 14 in their home burgeoned into a dynamic community with multiple congregations spread across London.
Forster’s leadership transcended mere numerical growth, focusing on the profound deepening of faith. In the 1980s, he founded a leadership training program, mentoring hundreds for ministry. His influence reached far beyond the United Kingdom, touching lives in diverse countries. Actively engaged in the March for Jesus movement, Forster advocated for public expressions of faith and addressed real-world issues through a practical theological approach.
In October 2021, Forster and his wife facilitated a leadership transition at Ichthus, handing over the reins to a team of seven led by Henry George. This marked a significant shift for Ichthus, maintaining Forster’s vision of a church actively involved in societal matters. As the ministry navigates this transition, Forster’s passing during Ichthus’s 50th Jubilee year will be commemorated in an upcoming tribute service, honoring the lasting impact of his life and work.
