Evangelists Brutally Assaulted And Left For Dead

Two evangelists in eastern Uganda remain hospitalized two weeks after a brutal assault by hardline Muslims for sharing their Christian faith, according to reports.

Samuel Mukiibi, aged 27, and Ephraim Duula, aged 25, who have collectively led numerous Muslims to embrace Christianity over the past six years, fell victim to the attack on May 16 near Naigombwa swamp close to Bukwanga village, Iganga Sub-County in Iganga District, eastern Uganda.

Having conducted an evangelistic campaign in the Nambale area from May 13 to May 16, the evangelists departed around 4 p.m. local time after conducting open-air preaching. As they neared the swamp, three Muslim individuals obstructed their path, as recounted by Mukiibi.

“They intercepted us and demanded that we renounce our faith in Jesus Christ, whom we had been preaching about at Naigombwa trading center for four consecutive days,” Mukiibi recounted to Morning Star News. “Simultaneously, they attempted to forcibly subject us to circumcision, in accordance with Islamic teachings, to coerce us into compliance. We vehemently refused, prompting them to launch a vicious assault on us with sharp objects, rendering us unconscious and leaving us in a pool of blood.”

The attackers seized their Bibles and Gospel literature before fleeing the scene, Mukiibi added.

“I was able to identify one of the perpetrators named Murshidi, who was addressing his accomplices using Islamic appellations,” Mukiibi recalled. “My colleague, Duula, sustained severe bleeding from his ears, facial bruises, and a deep gash on his left hand, while I suffered a neck injury, facial swelling, and bruising.”

Regaining consciousness at a hospital in Iganga, the pair discovered that motorcycle riders, led by an individual known only as Dauson, had come to their aid.

“Dauson informed us that he recognized our pastor and promptly dialed his number, resulting in the pastor’s swift arrival at the hospital,” recounted Dauson.

Iganga District, known for its predominantly Muslim population, has witnessed numerous cases of persecution against Christians, a trend well-documented by Morning Star News.

While Uganda’s constitution and legal framework guarantee religious freedom, permitting individuals to freely practice and propagate their faith, incidents such as this underscore the challenges faced by religious minorities, particularly in regions with significant Muslim populations.
